The embrace of not-for-profit organisations around the ACT of Williamsdale BESS is heartwarming. Their commitment to their cause is next level. We feel lucky to be able to support 9 wonderful community initiatives sharing $500,000 across them thanks to the Williamsdale BESS grants program. Plus, we also invested in a research partnership with the Australian National University’s Centre for Energy Systems (ACES, previously known as the Battery Storage and Grid Integration Program) to support the Centre’s research into how the ACT can implement energy solutions that accelerate the energy transition. 

Located at Williamsdale near Tuggeranong in the south of Canberra, the battery will store enough renewable energy to power one-third of Canberra for two hours during peak demand periods, increasing energy security and reliability for Canberrans. The Williamsdale BESS will provide a range of energy and essential system security services, particularly during the summer season when the electricity grid can come under stress. It will also provide fast acting frequency control services in just a few milliseconds to support the grid and minimise risks of disturbances. Williamsdale BESS is expected to be in operation in mid 2026. The Williamsdale BESS is part of the ACT Government’s Big Canberra Battery project. It further supports Canberra households in their use of renewable energy and the ACT Government’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2045.

We are especially proud that Williamsdale BESS is funding 9 local initiatives of not-for-profit organisations across a variety of community services, from youth support to river regeneration and building a nursery for native plants, to supporting cancer patients and those suffering food insecurity and are in the need for housing. Williamsdale BESS demonstrates how infrastructure means much more than delivering essential services. Read more about each initiative below.
